FB_20160312_13_57_01_Saved_PictureOur attention has been drawn to a communiqué red by the Chairman Northern Senators Forum, Senator Abdullahi Adamu on Wednesday 4th of May 2016. The Senator said,”it is wrong to categorize all herdsmen as Fulani, stressing that the labeling must stop. He also warned against provocative statements that could inflame temper in the country in view of massacre of villagers in Nimbo, Uzo- Uwani LGA of Enugu State by herdsmen. He stated further that he saw a lot of Yoruba cattle rearers when he travelled to the Western part of the country insisted that cattle rearing is no longer the exclusive preserve of the Fulani.” The Yoruba council/group youth wing, Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA) hereby debunked the assertion that Yoruba people are also herdsmen. Although, farming and other professional/artistic works and services like calabash carving, sculptural work, drum making, herbalism, hunting, and goldsmith are some of our traditional occupations. Nowadays, our people are not only planting crops they have combined poultry and livestock business like rearing of sheep, goats and cattle with farming but not in a nomadic way. Besides that, every occupation or business has it association in Southwest. In fact, locust beans sellers have their association. So, we are using this medium to tell the Northern Senators that Yoruba people are not nomads and none of us belongs to the Miyetty Allah Cattle Breeders Association. In addition to that, majority of the so called herdsmen are drug addicts and they are not disciplined while handling gun. Federal Government needed to regulate the use of arms and ammunitions. Moreso, various test must be done by relevant agencies to know who among the herdsmen capable mentally to carrying gun. If not, they would continue to kill innocent Nigerians.
