Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula, has banned the formation of armed ethnic based vigilante groups in the state.

Okaula in a statement issued in Ilorin on Sunday, warned that setting up of such groups was unacceptable, saying it amounts to formation of ethnic militia.

The CP said violation of the order would attract full wrath of the law, stressing that the formation of communal vigilante must undergo screening and profiling by Divisional Police Officers in various communities in the state.

The statement reads, “It has come to the notice of the command that certain individuals/group of persons are planning to form armed- ethnic- based vigilantes, as against a broad-based and all- inclusive vigilante for the purpose of assisting in the protection of lives and property within their communities.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the existing practice is that all intending members of such vigilante groups must have been identified by their communities. They must also be adequately screened and profiled by Divisional Police Officers in their respective communities.

“In view of the above, the command wishes to sternly warn that any attempt to form any ethnic based vigilante group/groups is totally unacceptable, as such would amount to formation of ethnic militia.

“Any person/group of persons who violates this warning would be made to face the full wrath of the law”.
