RACISM! StarTimes stirs public outrage on Twitter over staff comments

Just when the dust appears to be settling down on shocking racism and anti-labour allegations levelled against it by some employees and ex-employees, popular Chinese pay Tv company, StarTimes has yet again stirred up anger and public outcry in Nigeria.

The new wave of anger which has seen many of its Nigerian customers lampoon the embattled pay TV firm on social media started when its new Twitter handler, Oluwaseun Alaba, during a Tweet meet tagged STopenday engaged in battering and unprofessionally managing communications with customers on the StarTimes Nigeria Twitter handle.

With the industry currently led by DSTV and fresh emergence of new operators such as TStv and Kwese TV with irresistible promises of more robust content and control for customers, customers and observers would have expected the firm to double up on its acts at this time.

Rather than focusing on more customer-centric campaigns and strategizing on best plans to retain existing customers on StarTimes, the poor customer care and lack of professionalism of StarTimes as an organisation was revealed through the conversation of Oluwaseun, newly picked Social Media handler who through her Tweetchat “washed dirty linen” of StarTimes in the public rather than protect its reputation.

The interested StarTimes followers took to Tweeter to ask Oluwaseun various questions relating to the way the business is handled and their customer service direction, now that pay-TV market is more competitive, however her several responses was an ugly mix of insults, abuses and unethical jokes.
This attracted a large army of social media users expressing their displeasure at the unfair treatment by the company and calling for the immediate sack of the staff. Some of the interactions are below:

A Twitter user decided to ask why the management decided to remove a station from airing: “why did the management removed Get TV from the list of stations showing on star times.”..

…and the response was; “Bros, na only Get TV u dey watch for our platform?”

Another user declared: “Your subscribers are not here. They are busy watching Indian Soap.” and the handler replied:
“Atleast they are busy doing something, what are you doing?”

A user, Emmanuel usoro queried; “Your video quality is not too good. What is the plan to improve on it”.. and the handler replied:
“Bros na antenna you dey use abi? Upgrade to dish”

Then the shade for TSTV came when a user asked: “Why can’t startimes give us Wifi like TSTV promised”.. and the response was: “We are a pay TV operator. We don’t run a cyber cafe nor make empty promises.”
