Buhari Jerks Up Police Salary, Writes IGP
Officers and men of the Nigerian Police may have reason to rejoice as a new salary structure with rent subsidy seems to be in the offing following the approval of it upward review by the Federal Government.
According to the Presidency, the approval took effect from November 1, 2018, and will be funded from the treasury, indicating that policemen will have a merry Christmas.
Barely 10 years after the late President Umaru Yar’Adua jerk up the salary of policemen, the news of the increment was conveyed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris through a letter from the Office of the Executive Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission, High Chief Richard Onwuka Egbule.
A copy of the letter, dated October 31st, titled: RE ADDRESSING REMUNERATION CHALLENGES OF THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE, shows that it is an answer to a request made by the IGP on October 19, 2018.

The letter was silent on the details of the new minimum wage for the police.
A document attached, however, showed details of the rent subsidy from a Constable to the IGP.
A Constable will now receive not less than N86, 058 as rent subsidy, a Commissioner of Police gets up to N1,536,018, and the IGP – N3, 339, 688.

In January 2008, an increment was ordered by Yar’Adua which moved the minimum wage of policemen from N6000 to N26, 000.
SECURITY MONITOR however gathers that police officers in the country seems to be of the least pay in the continent of Africa as many opine that this may contribute to the abysmal performance of the NPF in some cases.
We hope it’s come to reality, that it will not be swept under the carpet
