FIRE ENGULFED MANDILAS MARKET, AS LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT SHUTS KATANGUA, OKE AFA MARKET

By Olayiwola Ibrahim// The collaborative efforts by emergency responders successfully contained the recent fire at Mandilas Building.
Firefighting operations now focus on dampening down the remaining pockets of fire fueled by stored merchandise.
The affected floors 2nd to 7th were managed by state responders, including Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos Ambulance Service, and others.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye indicated that the fire was originated from careless welding during the installation of a generator on the second floor, intended to expand trading space.
Margaret said that despite challenges with stacked goods and limited accessibility, responders curtailed the damage.
She further explained that the building, housing various businesses, experienced no fatalities; six members of the public incurred minor injuries, and were promptly treated on scene while conclusion of dampening down will precede a comprehensive damage assessment.
Meanwhile Lagos state government has sealed Katangua and Oke Afa markets respectively over environmental sanitation violations.
The Nation learnt the two markets were shut over filth and various environmental infractions.
In times past, the state government has enforced closures in several other markets throughout the state for violations of environmental sanitation standards.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Babatunde Ajayi confirmed the closure of the two markets on Sunday.
Announcing the update on X on Sunday, Ajayi said Katangua market sealed today 21st January, 2024 by the monitoring and compliance team of LAWMA due to gross environmental sanitation violations.
Oke Afa market, Isolo was also sealed up due to environmental sanitation and poor waste disposal practices today 21st January, 2024 by the Monitoring and Compliance Department.
