Storm Killed Senior Group Village Head Kaphwanya in Lilongwe

By Michael Martin/ Malawi// A devastating storm that hit the Chitukula area in Lilongwe, Malawi on the night of November 24, 2024, has claimed the life of Senior Group Village Head Kaphwanya.
The storm, which occurred around 10 pm, also destroyed several homes and properties, leaving many families without shelter or belongings.
Willison Kaphwanya, the son of the deceased, described the tragic events of that night.
He stated that: “My father was playing with my younger brother, Agness, inside the house when the storm hit. The strong winds blew off the roof, and my father was struck by a falling tree branch. He died instantly.”
The storm caused widespread destruction in the area, with over 500 homes affected.
Counsollor for the area, Mark-Joe Mwase reported that the storm damaged homes in Kasengere, Mzondo, Machokero, M’jumba, Chimawo, Chisusu, Mlambuzi, and Dzama.
“The storm destroyed roofs, walls, and belongings. Many families have lost their homes, food, clothes, and other essential items.”
Some of the victims have appealed to the government and well-wishers for assistance. “We need help to rebuild our homes and replace our lost belongings. We are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the storm.”
The community is currently assessing the extent of the damage and losses. Relief efforts are expected to commence soon, with the government and other stakeholders providing support to affected families.
