Malawi Lawyers condemn brutality and thuggery in the country

The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has strongly condemned the ongoing police brutality and thuggery in Lilongwe, calling on President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to take immediate action.
The MLS expressed concern over the denial of peaceful protests, which they say is a clear violation of the constitution.
The protests in Lilongwe were organized by the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) to pressure the government to address the ongoing fuel crisis and to demand the resignation of Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola and Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Director General Henry Kachaje.
The MLS has been vocal about its concerns regarding the erosion of democratic rights and the rule of law in Malawi.
In a recent statement, the society condemned the senseless violence that occurred in Lilongwe, where protesters were teargassed and others were hacked by some rascals pretending to be community policing members.
UNITED Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe and his followers were teargassed at Lilongwe Technical College, causing disruption to ongoing practical exams.
The incident left one student fainting on campus. The use of teargas has raised concerns about the safety of students and the handling of the situation by authorities.
Again, it has urged leaders of different political parties to take responsibility for their supporters and ensure that those who instigate violence face disciplinary action.
It has also called on the Malawi Police Service to thoroughly investigate incidents of violence and bring perpetrators to justice, regardless of their party affiliation.
