Mangochi, Malawi – On December 9, 2024, Tithandizane Female Sex Workers joined forces with Youth Net and Counseling (YONECO) to celebrate the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) at Nankhwali Primary School in Mangochi.

The 16 Days of Activism against GBV is an international campaign that takes place every year from November 25 to December 10.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of ending violence against women and girls.

This year’s theme, “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls in Malawi: Towards Beijing + 30,” emphasizes the need for unity and collective action to address GBV.

Speaking in an interview after the event, Programs Manager for Tithandizane Female Sex Workers (FSW), Memory Wankhama, emphasized the importance of unity in the fight against GBV.

“We need to unite as a community, as organizations, and as individuals to end violence against women and girls in Malawi,” she said.

Wankhama called on the government, organizations, and individuals to take action to end violence against women and girls in Malawi.

“We need to work together to create a society where women and girls are safe and free from violence,” she said.

In his remarks, Sewenthea, Programme Support Manager at YONECO, emphasized the significance of the 16 days of activism against GBV in raising awareness about gender-related abuses.

Chipofya highlighted YONECO’s efforts in working with stakeholders to raise awareness and provide support to survivors.

YONECO offers toll-free lines, including 116 for the child helpline and 5600 for GBV, as well as psychosocial support and counseling.
