ANTI MASSES POLICY: Lawyers March Against Lagos Land Use Charge

By Ade Babarinde,LAGOS/The Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, today protests against the upward review of Land Use Charge Law by the Lagos State Government.

The lawyers have earlier warned Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos state to revert the charge or face the wrath of the men of the bar.

NBA chairman, Mr. Adesina Ogunlana, lead members of the branch and others in the protest despite speculations that the protest may not hold.
The branch Chairman had taken to social media yesterday to reiterate that the protest would hold as planned.

SECURITY MONITOR gathers that attempt by the Lagos Police boss to stop the protest failed.
However, the Police later agreed to provide security cover.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem, attempt to persuade his colleagues at the bar to shelve the protest also failed.

It was learns that other civil society groups have joined the call for the abolition of the hike which has received widespread condemnation from Lagosians.

Ogulana in his address at the rally urges protesters to be law abiding, peaceful and humbly focus on the objective of the strike, which, he said, “is a clear no to oppressive tax regime”.
The protest is ongoing as at the time of filling this report
