22 YEARS AFTER, GROUP REMEMBERS KUDIRAT OLAYINKA ABIOLA

She was very active and socially conscious during her days. The tireless support she gave to her husband, M.K.O Abiola, when he was incarcerated pulled the string of her death. On the 4th of June, 1996, Kudirat Abiola was assassinated by some gunmen in Lagos allegedly on the orders of the Sani Abacha military junta.

The June 12 that would latter result to her death was adjudged the free and fair ever election in the history of Nigeria but was annulled by Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda regime.

On this day, various right groups are celebrating this legend and fearless democrat who stood against all odds to confront the Abacha government.

According to the Executive Director of Centre Against Injustice & Domestic Violence(CAIDOV ), Comrade Gbenga Soloki, ” Today is a watershed in the history of democracy in Nigeria when the agents of darkness reserved to kill freedom, and silence the Will of the people. This brave woman  with all life affluence at her disposal preferred the way of the common man to speak for them to ensuring democracy is entrenched.She fought gallantly with notable leaders in the pro democracy  movement and she paid with her life. She was loyal to her husband, democracy and her country.  She would have still been alive if she had stayed aloof, but chose martydom. ”

“On the 220nd anniversary  of her death, we celebrate this remarkable day because this heroine died for democracy and her selfless service to mankind must always  be appreciated  and remembered. We must as Nigerians never forget the struggle of Kudirat and Abiola’s family in achieving democracy in Nigeria,” he concluded.
