NiMet DG, Sani Elected Into Council of The World Meteorological Organisation Excos

The Director General / CEO of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Permanent Representative of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi, has been elected a member of the Executive Council of the WMO.
The event took place o. Wednesday 20th June, 2018 at the Executive Council Seventieth Session (EC70) meeting held at the Organisation’s headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland.
The World Meteorological Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations for weather and climate, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences, comprising 192 members charged with the responsibility to formulate policies, scrutinise programmes and give directions on all matters of meteorology.
The Council comprise of 37 members(9 from Africa) representing the 192 members if the WMO. Nigeria is the only Anglophone country representing West Africa on the Executive Council.
According to a press release from the Public Relation Unit of NiMet, Prof. Mashi’s membership of the revered Council will provide an opportunity for Nigeria to access firsthand knowledge of current global issues and apply it into Nigeria’s situation. It will also strengthen multi-lateral and bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and other countries worldwide on weather, climate, water, environment and sustainable development issues.
I line with the WMO standard, Nigeria’s membership, will run for  four years of which will enable NiMet to strengthen it’s existing relationship with research and devee communities worldwide.
