COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS COMMEND PROMPT AND PROGRESSIVE INTERVENTION OF THE FCCPC UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF DR. TUNJI BELLO

By Olayiwola Ibrahim // The Democracy and Good Government Watch Initiative,a coalition of civil society organizations wishes to extend its profound gratitude and commendation to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission FCCPC for its timely and proactive actions in response to critical consumer issues.
The group noted that the dynamic leadership of Dr. Tunji Bello, the FCCPC has demonstrated a renewed commitment and vigour to upholding the rights of Nigerian consumers, providing much needed relief and a sense of belonging to the mass of the people of Nigeria.
In just two weeks, the FCCPC has shown remarkable responsiveness and dedication to addressing pressing concerns, including but not limited to the following.
Intervention in the Planned Phase Out of Unistar Meters
Following our raised alarm about the proposed phasing out of the so called obsolete Unistar meters by Electricity Distribution Companies DISCOs, and the attendant public apprehension over this policy, we appreciate the swift response of the FCCPC in insisting that consumers’ rights be protected.
We appreciate FCCPC intervention in ensuring that the burden does not unjustly fall on the consumers, but rather be absorbed by the DISCOS as required.
Response to Incessant Downtime in Internet Banking Services
The persistent failures experienced by customers of many Nigerian banks services especially in accessing Internet banking services, have caused untold distress.
The coalition raised concerns regarding this issue, and we have noted with satisfaction the prompt response of the FCCPC.
The quick intervention and your emphasis on consumer protection, as guided by Sections 17(j), (l), (s), 116(2), 124, 125, 138, and 155 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act FCCPA 2018, have brought a renewed sense of relief to banking customers across the country.
The coalition commends Dr. Tunji Bello’s vibrant and progressive leadership.
It is a clear indication that the FCCPC is committed to prioritizing consumer rights and ensuring fairness in the Nigerian market space.
We look forward to continued collaboration and urge the Commission to remain vigilant in addressing the numerous challenges faced by consumers across all sectors.
