Mr. Chen Gaochong, who had been on the run since 2019, was finally captured in Lagos after a covert INTERPOL-led operation.
Chen, accused of illegally issuing fake VAT invoices worth over RMB 4.9 million in China, fled through Hong Kong to Burkina Faso before sneaking into Nigeria. He lived under the radar for years, even refusing to renew his passport to avoid detection.
Following a formal request from Chinese authorities, INTERPOL NCB Abuja launched a discreet operation that led to his arrest on June 24, 2025. Less than two weeks later, on July 3, he was handed over to Chinese police for prosecution.
This high-stakes operation highlights Nigeria’s commitment to global justice. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s zero tolerance for criminals using Nigeria as a hideout.
“No fugitive will find refuge here,” the IGP declared. “We stand firmly with our international partners in the fight against transnational crime.”
