By Olayiwiola Ibrahim // The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched Snacks for Thought (PBAT FEEDS), a strategic breakfast initiative under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), aimed at enhancing learning outcomes through improved child nutrition.

The initiative provides nutritious morning meals to school children before the start of academic activities, addressing one of the most critical barriers to learning — hunger.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, National Programme Manager of RH-NHGSFP, described the initiative as a decisive step toward strengthening Nigeria’s human capital foundation.

The more developed your knowledge base is, the smarter you are — but you cannot be smarter than your knowledge base.

She emphasized that Snacks for Thoughts is not merely a feeding intervention, but a national development strategy that integrates nutrition, education, and productivity.

The programme is expected to:

   •   Improve student concentration and cognitive performance

   •   Increase school attendance and retention

   •   Strengthen local agricultural value chains through structured procurement

   •   Empower women, youth, and smallholder farmers

The launch event brought together Excellencies, Honourable Ministers, Hon. Minister for Education was ably represented, Hon. State of Minister for Ministry of Humanitarian and Poverty Reduction was present, Members of the National Assembly, Directors-General, Managing Directors, development partners, and key stakeholders, demonstrating strong institutional alignment and national commitment.

At the heart of the event were school children — holding their meal packs — symbolizing a powerful shift in national priorities toward nutrition-driven education and inclusive development.

Snacks for Thought complements the existing school feeding programme by ensuring that children are nourished at the start of the school day, thereby maximizing the impact of classroom instruction.

This initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable human capital development, recognizing that national growth begins with the well-being, nutrition, and cognitive development of its children.
