News Analysis: APC, The Crumbling Party Without Opposition, By ‘Wale Abideen

Bolaji Abdullahi, the A.P.C’s ( All Progressive Congress’) National Publicity Secretary could clear the air on why the National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings of the ruling party scheduled for Monday and Tuesday had to be postponed. Party loyalists across the nation were optimistic of a wall mending meetings and deliberations that could douse the internal bickering and discrepancies amongst the diverse A.P.C’S members.

“The postponement was due to unexpected developments, however, new dates for the meetings would be announced in due course.” the party’s spokesman said.

Notwithstanding, the famous electioneering movement tagged ‘CHANGE’ that piloted the hitherto  opposition party into power in 2015, the A.P.C fails to convince Nigerians that it’s a genuine ‘CHANGE AGENTS’. Almost all the ranks and files of the party have been thrown into deep crisis and the strain that exist between the top echelon of the party have seized to be abated resulting into lack luster political movement and maladministration. The theater of the party’s show of shame is succinctly orchestrated in the National Assembly where the Senate President leads the chest war against the Presidency. To this extent, presidential nominations into publics offices were turned down on the alter of frivolous allegations.  Though, the duo of executive and legislative arms of government publicly relate and laugh it off as if nothing odd is happening. the masses suffer the brunt.

From the national key figures to ward officers of the A.P.C there is optimistic that ruling party will soon come together. This expectation is not unusual and the expressions by grassroots members depict that all will soon be well with the party. The National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, had on Jan. 25, 2017, constituted a 10-member committee to review the party`s Constitution.

The committee was expected to review the constitution ahead of the party`s non-elective National Convention expected to hold in April. The decision to review the party`s constitution was taken at its last NEC meeting. The review was to address some issues, especially on discipline and membership.

SECURITY MONITOR learns that three blocks exist in the party and each block will not like to expose it’s intentions to outshine others ahead of the next general elections as the time is not ripe for such confrontations. Thus, the recommendations of the Oyegun’s 10 man committee may not see the light of the day. This, is however what transpired in the screening of Ibrahim Magu as E.F.C.C.’s (Economic and Financial Crisis Commission’s)Chairman. It was learnt that a powerful block of the party prefers Magu but the rejection by two other blocks in the party has been a clog in the wheel.

It is not pessimistic to foresee a prologue disharmony amongst the APC. This is because the country at the moment has no virile opposition political movement. How quick the APC resolves its internal crisis depends on the desire and agenda of the opposition P.D.P (Peoples Democratic Party) in its quest to return to power. This, analysts posit will keep the ruling party on its toes unfortunately, the PDP in its totality is a crumbled party.
