The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will commemorate the 2023 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists with its WSCIJ Journalism & Society Conversations, scheduled for Thursday, 2 November, at 11am. The central theme of the conversation to be hosted on X (formerly Twitter) will be “Combating impunity and ensuring journalists’ safety in a digital age”. Click here to join the conversation.

The November edition will feature Tunde Akanni, Director, Digital Media Research Centre at the Lagos State University; Kolapo Olapoju, Editor at TheCable and Inibehe Effiong, Human Rights and Public Lawyer. Others are Ima Elijah, Senior Political Reporter at the Pulse Ng and Damilola Ayeni, Editor at the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). Sarah Ayeku, a Reporter at TVC News, will moderate the discussion.

The virtual event seeks to shed light on the actions of state and non-state actors that deliberately curtail public awareness and meaningful discourse by targeting the media. It will bring stakeholders around Nigeria together and draw attention to crimes against journalists. During the event, panellists will delve into unresolved cases of harassment, imprisonment, or violence against journalists in Nigeria, ultimately raising awareness about journalist safety and acts of impunity.

The WSCIJ Journalism & Society Conversations is a forum for online discussions about the place of the media in society – nationally and globally. This virtual engagement provides a safe space for stakeholders to access how journalists and the media perform and learn from experience sharing. This edition welcomes participation from journalists, law enforcement agents, civil society organisations, human rights advocates, communication students and the public.
