Obaze Panel: Why Some Banks’ Executives May Go To Jail

By Wale Abydeen/ ABUJA// The All Progressives Congress, APC led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may be marching some banks’ executives to the prison for setting up a special investigation into the the country’s financial sector under the immediate past governor of Central Bank of Nigeria,. CBN, Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele has been incarcerated since the emergence of Tinubu in May, 2023. Information at the disposal of SECURITY MONITOR depicts that the presidency is interested in a thorough investigation as he has cautioned bank executives indicted by the special investigative team not to seek his interference in their favour.

Some bank executives and business moguls have been making “frantic moves to reach out to top aides of the president in the Villa to find a soft landing for them.”

Some industry players,  SECURITY MONITOR scoops met with Tinubu to give them a soft landing in the special investigation headed by Jim Obaze.

The Obaze led panel submit periodic report to President Bola Tinubu and it was learnt that Obaze is ready to submit another report to the President in the next couples of days.

Sources from the Presidency reveals Emefiele had mentioned some of the bank chiefs as either beneficiaries of the sleaze funds or accessories who facilitated the disbursement of the monies under investigation.

One of the sources noted that some of the banks’ chiefs, who benefitted from the Anchor Borrowers programme and business moguls involved in dollar round-tripping, had earlier trailed the President to Paris, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia when he visited.

It was gathered they were jittery over their involvement in the mess and for fear of being caught in the web sought the President’s attention.

The bank chefs and popular businessmen went to meet the President in a last minute move to stop the Obaze-led team from including them among those to be arraigned for prosecution. This is said to be their greatest fear as gathered by SECURITY MONITOR.

President Tinubu washed his hands off the probe ad he affirmed it is a matter solely for the special investigator, Obaze and his team.
