By Michael Martin/MALAWI// A recent report by Welt Hunger Hilfe and Concern Worldwide has revealed that 64 countries, including Malawi, are unlikely to achieve zero hunger by 2030.

It says that climate change is expected to exacerbate hunger, with over 80 million people, mostly from Africa and least developed countries, projected to face food insecurity.

“This is particularly concerning for Malawi, where agriculture plays a vital role in the economy, accounting for 85% of employment,” reads part of the report.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Malawi has made notable progress in reducing hunger and undernutrition since 2000.

The country’s Global Hunger Index (GHI) score has improved from 44.7 in 2000 to 26.5 in 2018, indicating a decline in hunger and undernutrition.

It says several factors contribute to food insecurity in Malawi, including weather Shocks like droughts, floods, and high temperatures, frequently decrease food production and increase food insecurity.

“Gender Inequality female-headed households generally have poorer food security than male-headed households. The high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Malawi contributes to malnutrition and hunger.”

The report recommends strengthening accountability to international law and enforcing the right to adequate food. Additionally, improving dietary diversity, promoting crop diversity, and enhancing access to markets are crucial for ensuring food security in Malawi.
