President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced leadership changes in several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, which has been renamed Yakubu Gowon University. As part of the restructuring, the president has dissolved the governing council and removed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, which stated that the changes aim to “strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”

To replace Maikudi, President Tinubu has appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term. However, the statement clarified that she “will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position when it becomes available.”

In addition, Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, replacing the previous governing council. His former position at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will now be occupied by Senator Joy Emordi, who previously served as Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

The presidency emphasized that these leadership changes are part of broader efforts to reform governance and address leadership challenges in Nigeria’s universities. Similar adjustments were also made at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other institutions.

All appointments and reassignments take effect immediately.
