Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Unnatural Offense
The Nkhunga First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced Robert Budala, 48, to eight years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for engaging in carnal knowledge of a person against the order of nature, contrary to Section 153(a) of the Penal Code.

Sub Inspector Andrew Kamanga, Public Relations Officer for Nkhunga Police Station, confirmed the development in an interview.

He said during the court proceedings, State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Micheas Chatsira told the court that the offense occurred on July 10, 2025, around 3:00 PM, when the victim, a young boy returning from play, was lured by the convict to a maize mill where he worked.

“There, Budala committed the unnatural act.

“Following the incident, Budala handed the victim a K2,000 note and threatened him not to speak about the matter. Despite the threat, the victim reported the ordeal to members of the police forum, leading to Budala’s arrest.

“In court, Budala pleaded guilty to the charge,” he said.

He added that while submitting for sentencing, Sub Inspector Chatsira emphasized the seriousness of the offense and its psychological impact on the minor, urging the court to impose a stiff penalty.

“In mitigation, Budala, a first-time offender, pleaded for leniency, citing personal circumstances.”

However, he said, First Grade Magistrate Kingsley Buleya concurred with the prosecution and handed down a sentence of 96 months IHL, stressing the need to deter similar offenses in the community.

“The Malawi Police Service remains committed to ensuring that such crimes are investigated thoroughly and perpetrators are brought to justice. We commend the victim for his courage to report the matter, and we urge communities to work with law enforcement in safeguarding children and other vulnerable groups.”

Robert Budala hails from **Mjuwa Village, Traditional Authority Kaphambale, in Nkhotakota District.
