Unofficial election results in Malawi suggest a decisive victory for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika in the presidential election held on Tuesday.

According to the data, Mutharika has garnered 3,016,266 votes, representing 56.8% of the total votes cast.

He is followed by Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who has secured 1,742,180 votes about 32.8% of the total.

In third place is Dalitso Kabambe, representing the United Transformation Movement (UTM), who reportedly received 213,891 votes.

The reported total voter turnout stands at 5,306,871, a significant figure suggesting high public engagement in this electoral cycle.

If the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) confirms these results, it would mean a strong return to power for Peter Mutharika, potentially leading the country until 2030.

Mutharika previously served as President from 2014 to 2020 before losing to Chakwera in a court ordered re run.

Again, MEC may release official preliminary results if these match the unofficial numbers celebrations among DPP supporters could erupt across major cities like Blantyre and Lilongwe.

Heightened security expected Police and military presence may increase tonight, especially near MEC offices and known political hotspots.
