There is tight security at High Court in Lilongwe where the court is expected to hear a bail application from Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda.

Chimwendo Banda is facing charges related to an alleged attempt to murder Frank Chawanda in 2021.

Police officers in riot gear have been deployed at various points around the court premises to ensure security and maintain order.

The heightened security comes as the court session has attracted public attention due to the high-profile nature of the case.

Supporters of the Malawi Congress Party have also gathered at the court premises ahead of the hearing.

One of Chimwendo Banda’s lawyers, George Kadzipatike, confirmed developments regarding his client’s attendance.

Kadzipatike said Chimwendo Banda will not appear in court today because he is currently admitted to a hospital.

According to the lawyer, Chimwendo Banda is receiving medical treatment after reporting that he is not feeling well.

Despite his absence, the bail application is still scheduled to be heard by the court.

The matter is being presided over by Judge Mzondi Mvula, who will determine the way forward on the bail request.
