NRB extends use of expired national IDs until 2027

Government through National Registration Bureau-NRB has sanctioned a nationwide extension allowing expired National Identity cards to remain usable until January 1, 2027.
The announcement was made by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) through a statement released on Christmas Day.
NRB Principal Secretary Patrick Machika confirmed that the decision applies to all National ID cards whose validity has lapsed.
Under the new arrangement, expired IDs will continue to be recognized for every official, legal and commercial transaction across the country.
According to Machika, the extension is aimed at giving the bureau adequate time to complete a massive renewal exercise.
The NRB is currently working to renew, print and distribute an estimated two million National ID cards that have already expired.
Authorities say the move is critical to ensuring that citizens are not denied access to essential public and private services.
The decision is also expected to ease pressure on government offices, businesses, and financial institutions that rely on valid identification.
Machika noted that without the extension, many Malawians could face unnecessary administrative and financial challenges.
As part of the directive, all ministries, departments, and agencies have been instructed to continue accepting expired IDs.
The private sector has likewise been urged to treat expired National ID cards as valid until the new deadline takes effect.
The NRB has assured the public that updates will be provided as the renewal and distribution process progresses nationwide.
