Malawi Flames Legends emerged victorious after edging out Zambia’s Chipolopolo Legends 6–5 on penalties in a thrilling encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The match, played in a celebratory atmosphere, lived up to expectations as both sides showcased flashes of brilliance reminiscent of their glory days.
Zambia took early control of the game and went into the second half with a commanding 2–0 lead, putting Malawi under serious pressure.
Despite the setback, the Flames Legends refused to give up and showed great character as the match approached the closing stages.
Flames comeback began late in the second half when Mapopa Msukwa pulled one back, reigniting belief among the home supporters.
Moments later, Jimmy Zakazaka struck the equaliser, completing a dramatic turnaround and forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
The crowd erupted as Malawi completed the comeback, celebrating the resilience and fighting spirit shown by the legends.
In the penalty shootout, Flames were flawless, converting all six of their spot kicks with confidence and composure.
Goalkeeper Simplex Nthala proved to be the hero of the moment after making a crucial save, denying Zambia one of their penalties.
Zambia managed to score five of their six penalties, but Nthala’s save ultimately made the difference.
The victory marked Malawi’s first win over Zambia Legends after two previous meetings failed to produce a Malawian triumph.
Earlier encounters had seen Zambia claim a 2–1 win in Chipata in October 2023, followed by a draw in their second meeting.
The match featured several familiar faces from both sides, rekindling memories of the intense regional rivalry of the 1980s and 1990s.
Fans were treated to a nostalgic display of skill, experience, and passion, proving that the legends still have plenty to offer.
Malawi’s win not only secured the trophy on offer but also restored pride, as the Flames Legends finally turned the tables on their long-time rivals.
