LAGOS GOVT ORDERS EVACUATION AROUND BURNING GNI BUILDING
The Lagos State Government is enforcing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive for residents and businesses within 100 meters of the burnt Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building to evacuate immediately. Experts have warned of inherent dangers to lives and property due to compromised buildings around the scene.
The 25-storey GNI building caught fire on December 24, and despite efforts to contain it, several buildings were affected. The death toll has risen to five, with eight injured victims receiving treatment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has ordered the building’s demolition once the fire is fully extinguished, citing safety concerns. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders are on the scene.
