Police in Blantyre have arrested two men in connection with the gruesome murder of 76-year-old William Chisambi who was hacked to death at Soche Hill where he regularly went for prayers.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Soche Police Station, Hopeness Potani, confirmed the arrests and identified the suspects as Martin Brighton, 41, from Chikumba Village and Jackson Mahomba, 31, from Kuweluza Village, both under Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo District.

According to Potani, the deceased had built an altar for the Will of God Ministries at Soche Hill and frequently visited the site for prayers and to water flowers planted around the altar.

“On the day of the incident, Chisambi reportedly left home carrying a bucket to fetch water as was his usual routine,” he said.

However, Potani said when he failed to return home, family members became concerned and launched a search around the hill.

“The family only discovered his sandals and a bucket near the altar,” said Potani.

The matter was later reported to Soche Police who conducted a further search and discovered Chisambi’s body some distance from the altar with multiple wounds on his legs.

His body was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where postmortem results confirmed that he died due to excessive blood loss.

Police investigations later led to the arrest of the two suspects, who are also believed to be linked to several robbery cases in the area.

Meanwhile, Soche Police have assured residents around Soche Hill of their safety, saying security measures and strategies have been strengthened to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
