The Nigerian media community has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden passing of veteran journalist, Dotun Oladipo, the founder and publisher of The Eagle Online magazine. He died at the tender age of 56.

Oladipo, who also served as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, after suffering a sudden health emergency.

According to close professional colleagues, the top journalist appeared perfectly healthy and had been going about his normal daily activities earlier in the day. Friends confirmed having steady discussions with him. Oladipo had reportedly gone to the gym with his wife earlier on Tuesday before proceeding with his normal activities and had even made his final social media post just hours before his death.

The tragedy unfolded later in the evening when Oladipo suddenly fell ill while en route to a meeting. Sensing the urgency, he managed to reach out to his doctor via telephone through a bystander. Despite the doctor’s telephone guidance and swift attempts by those nearby to revive him, his efforts proved abortive, and the respected pen-pusher passed away before getting medical aid.

Preliminary reports suggest he suffered a suspected heart attack.

Before establishing The Eagle Online, Oladipo built an illustrious career working with top media platforms, including The Punch Newspapers. His sudden death comes roughly a year and a half after he, his wife, and his daughter narrowly escaped death in March 2025 during the infamous Otedola Bridge tanker fire.

While his family survived that horrific incident, Oladipo’s vehicle was destroyed, and his longtime mechanic, Rotimi Olaleye, unfortunately lost his life.

The news has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian digital media space, with members of GOCOP and the journalism community offering prayers and condolences to the family he left behind.
