LASTMA SEEKS STRATEGIC COLLABORATION WITH CHINESE CONSULATE ON ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
By Olayiwola Ibrahim // The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki*, led senior management officials of the Agency on a high-level working visit to the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos.
The visit, held today, is part of LASTMA’s ongoing efforts to explore strategic collaboration on the adoption of advanced technology for traffic management and control in Lagos State.
The delegation was received by Her Excellency, Yan Yuqing, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos.
The meeting created an important diplomatic and professional platform for discussions on modern traffic management, technological innovation, and the growing mobility challenges facing Lagos as a fast-expanding megacity.
Addressing the Consulate officials, Mr. Bakare-Oki stressed the need to integrate cutting-edge technology, global best practices and institutional expertise to improve the efficiency, accuracy and responsiveness of traffic operations across Lagos.
He observed that the rising number of vehicles, increasing commercial activities and growing travel demand in the State make it necessary to build a technology-driven traffic management system that can effectively tackle congestion, incident response, enforcement, surveillance and road user engagement.
According to him, LASTMA is committed to continuously upgrading its operations through the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), real-time traffic monitoring, smart surveillance, artificial intelligence, data-driven enforcement, automated incident detection and other modern traffic control solutions.
The General Manager added that the proposed partnership with the Chinese Consulate could provide access to international expertise and proven technological solutions, while enabling LASTMA to adapt global innovations to the specific realities of Lagos’ transport environment.
He also noted that technology must be supported by continuous capacity building, specialised training and knowledge transfer to ensure that LASTMA personnel have the skills required to operate and maintain advanced traffic systems.
In her remarks, Her Excellency Yan Yuqing welcomed the delegation and highlighted the value of strengthening institutional and professional cooperation between Lagos State authorities and Chinese stakeholders in transportation, urban mobility and technological development.
The discussions covered key areas of common interest such as intelligent transportation systems, traffic data management, road safety, technical capacity building, operational efficiency and innovative approaches to urban mobility challenges.
Mr. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to building strategic partnerships with reputable local and international institutions whose expertise can help deliver safer roads, smoother traffic flow, faster incident response and a more organised transport system.
The working visit marks a significant step in expanding LASTMA’s international collaborations and advancing the Agency’s transition to a more intelligent, technology-driven, data-based and sustainable traffic management system for Lagos State.
