For decades, the traditional pathway into a professional career has been relatively straightforward- attend university, complete a programme of study, graduate and enter the workforce.

That model is increasingly being challenged.

Across Nigeria, universities, employers, governments and development organizations are having a broader conversation about whether academic institutions can adequately prepare graduates for industries that are becoming more specialized, technology-driven and rapidly changing.

Healthcare is one of the clearest examples.

As African countries seek to expand pharmaceutical production and develop indigenous health technologies, the demand is growing for professionals who possess not only academic qualifications but also an understanding of how healthcare technologies and products are developed, manufactured and deployed in real-world settings.

This is placing greater emphasis on industry-academia collaboration.

Rather than treating education and employment as two separate stages, the emerging approach seeks to create stronger connections between what students learn in the classroom and what they will encounter in the workplace.

The gap between knowing and doing

Universities remain central to developing the scientific foundations required for healthcare. Students can learn the principles of biotechnology, pharmaceutical science, engineering, nanotechnology, diagnostics and other disciplines within academic environments.

The challenge comes when those students move from theory to practice.

A graduate may understand the science behind a diagnostic technology without having seen how a diagnostic product is manufactured. An engineering student may understand production systems without having experienced the quality requirements of a regulated healthcare environment. A student may complete years of academic study without gaining a clear picture of the range of professional roles that exist within the healthcare value chain.

Industry exposure can help close some of these gaps.

Factory visits, internships, industrial training, mentorship programs, joint research and industry-informed curricula can give students a clearer understanding of how their academic knowledge is applied.

For employers, these relationships can provide an opportunity to contribute to curriculum development while gaining access to emerging talent.

For universities, they can help ensure that academic programs remain connected to developments taking place outside the campus.

And for students, the benefit may be the most immediate: an opportunity to understand not only what they are studying, but where that knowledge can take them.

A shift already underway

The growing interest in these partnerships is not happening in isolation.

Around the world, universities are increasingly working with industry to provide students with practical experience and exposure to emerging technologies. In Africa, the need is particularly relevant as countries seek to build domestic capabilities in sectors traditionally dependent on imported expertise, products and technologies.

Healthcare manufacturing presents a particularly important case.

Building a pharmaceutical or diagnostic manufacturing sector requires more than physical infrastructure. It requires scientists who understand product development, engineers who can operate sophisticated equipment, quality professionals familiar with regulatory requirements, researchers capable of advancing technologies and technical personnel able to maintain production systems.

Developing this workforce cannot be the responsibility of universities alone.

Industry cannot do it alone either.

The emerging model is therefore one of shared responsibilities, where universities provide the academic foundation and industry provides opportunities to understand how that knowledge operates in practice.

Some Nigerian companies were engaging earlier

While the conversation around industry-academia collaboration is gaining greater attention today, some Nigerian companies began exploring the model a few years ago.

Codix Pharma is one example.

Through its Codix Academy initiative, the company began working with educational institutions to provide students with exposure to healthcare technology and industry environments.

One of its more developed collaborations has been with Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), where a programme in Biosensors and Nanotechnology was introduced.

The initiative is notable not simply because of the subject area, but because it connects academic learning with exposure to an operating healthcare technology environment.

Students have opportunities to visit facilities including Codix Bio’s diagnostic manufacturing operations and Colexa Biosensor, allowing them to observe aspects of production, technology and quality management that would otherwise be difficult to replicate in a conventional classroom.

The approach predates much of the current emphasis on industry-ready graduates and illustrates what an industry-academia partnership can look like when it extends beyond guest lectures or occasional student visits.

From exposure to experience

There is an important distinction between introducing students to an industry and preparing them for it.

A facility visit can provide exposure. A structured internship can provide experience.
Increasingly, partnerships are attempting to connect the two.

The Codix-OOU collaboration, for instance, has provided opportunities for selected students to continue gaining practical experience through internships and other engagements while completing their education.

This type of progression creates a potential pathway from university into the workplace. It also allows students to encounter the professional expectations of an industry before graduation.

That can be particularly valuable in emerging fields where students may have limited opportunities to observe the technologies and career paths associated with their discipline.

Why healthcare may need this model more than most

The case for closer university-industry collaboration becomes stronger as healthcare itself becomes more technologically complex.

Diagnostics increasingly involve advanced technologies. Manufacturing processes are becoming more sophisticated. Data, artificial intelligence, biosensors, biotechnology and digital health are creating new intersections between disciplines that were previously taught relatively separately.

The professionals required by this environment will therefore need more than knowledge within a single academic discipline.

They will need an understanding of how different areas of expertise come together to solve healthcare problems. This is one reason industry exposure can be valuable.

A student studying biosensors, for example, may understand the underlying science. Seeing how a biosensor-related technology fits into product development, manufacturing, quality control or healthcare delivery can provide context that a conventional academic curriculum may not fully offer.

The Nigerian manufacturing question

There is also a broader economic argument.

Nigeria has long relied significantly on imported medicines, medical products and technologies. Efforts to increase local manufacturing are intended not only to improve supply resilience but also to create industrial capabilities, employment and opportunities for innovation.

Yet local manufacturing requires a local talent base.

The development of factories and laboratories without a corresponding investment in people creates a sustainability challenge.

This is where closer relationships between universities and companies could become strategically important.

Universities produce the graduates. Industry understands the practical skills required. Bringing the two perspectives together can help create a more responsive talent pipeline.

The objective is not for universities to become extensions of corporate training departments, nor for companies to take over academic responsibilities.

Rather, it is to create enough interaction between the two environments that graduates are better prepared for the realities they will encounter after school.

From collaboration to a talent ecosystem

The most effective partnerships may ultimately be those that create an ecosystem rather than a series of isolated activities.

Curriculum development can establish the academic foundation.

Industry visits can provide exposure. Internships can develop practical competence.
Mentorship can provide professional guidance. Research collaboration can connect academic inquiry with industry challenges. Employment can complete the transition.

When these elements work together, the relationship between universities and employers becomes more than a recruitment exercise. It becomes part of a broader system for developing the human capital required by an industry.

For Africa’s healthcare ambitions, that distinction matters.

The continent’s future healthcare needs will not be met simply by importing more technologies or building more facilities. The ability to develop sustainable local capabilities will depend increasingly on whether there are enough people who understand those technologies and know how to apply them.
