Wike Accuses Amaechi of Looting Rivers Funds to Buy Houses for Young Women
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi of looting the state’s treasury and allegedly using public funds to buy houses for young women. Wike made the allegation on Friday, October 9, 2026, while speaking in Abuja during a meeting with chairmen of the six FCT area councils.
Wike challenged Amaechi to account for spending on projects executed during his eight-year tenure as Rivers governor, including a reported $39 million cassava flour mill project, a ₦68 billion monorail project and the sale of the state’s gas turbine. He alleged that public funds were wasted and questioned what the state gained from the transactions.
The FCT minister’s remarks followed comments attributed to Amaechi that people who vote for President Bola Tinubu are “thieves” or “mad people.” Wike condemned the remarks, arguing that politicians seeking public office should focus on issues rather than insult voters and political opponents.
Wike also warned that Amaechi could find it difficult to campaign in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections if he continued making such comments. He said Tinubu’s supporters in the state would not allow the former governor to campaign freely.
