Lagos Well Tragedy: Man Dies Trying to Rescue Toddler in Abule Egba
A man has died while attempting to rescue a toddler who fell into a domestic well at Abule Egba, Lagos State. The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at a compound on Paul Street, inward Agbe Road.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the man entered the well to save the child but became trapped and was later recovered dead. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the police, carried out a rescue operation, but efforts to recover the toddler were unsuccessful.
According to LASEMA, the well’s depth, high water level and thick mud hampered the search. A specialist diver was deployed, but only one of the toddler’s shoes was recovered before the operation was called off following consultations with the family and community leaders.
The agency urged residents to properly cover and secure wells, particularly in homes where children live. It also advised the public to call the emergency numbers 767 or 112 rather than attempt dangerous rescue operations without professional assistance.
