BENUE IMPEACHMENT SAGA:STOP LEGISLATIVE RASCALITY, GROUP URGES LAWMAKERS
A call has gone to the 8 lawmakers of the Benue state house of Assembly that purportedly served an impeachment notice on the governor of the state,Samuel Otorm to desist from what it described as “legislative rascality”, that’s condemnable and irresponsible ,which cannot stand.
This call was made on Monday in Lagos by the Centre Against Injustice and domestic Violence (CAIDOV) in press release signed by its Executive Director, Gbenga Soloki and made available to Journalists, where he condemned the minority lawmakers ,stressing that their action smacks of irresponsibility and an exercise in futility that can’t stand the test of time in a democracy.
The CAIDOV boss berated the police and DSS for their ignoble roles in the exercise, advising that Nigeria cannot return to the Obasanjo era when minority with the support of the presidency will lord their position on the majority and that all progress living people of the world will resist this act of impunity.
The group further advised that the decampment of the Governor can be challenged in a court of competent jurisdiction instead of this primitive and illegal method being displayed by the minority in the state assembly..
According to CAIDOV ” we received the news of the alleged service of notice of impeachment by 8 members of the Benue state house of with shock and disbelief. Its rather unfortunate that a minority will ever think of impeaching a governor when the majority are prevented from gaining access into the assembly complex. The role of the police in this macabre dance is to say the least, irresponsible and a ploy to create chaos. The gains of our democracy can’t be withered away for political expediency of the present actors. Never again can we be taken back to the Obasanjo ruthless and reckless era in governance when minority with the support of the president will always force its will on the majority”
Continuing ” while we sympathise with the Governor’s erstwhile party for the loss, its more reasonable and responsible to approach the court to determine whether the governor having abandoned the party has any moral right to continue to be in the office on another platform.”
The group conclusively enjoined the political class in the national interest desist from actions that will engender chaos or loss of life as being witnessed in Benue now,but rather efforts should be geared at restoring peace.
