Low Sugar Label Is Deceitful As Court Orders NB Plc To Apologise To Customer

Justice Esohe Ikpomwen of Edo High Court, on Wednesday, ordered the Nigerian Breweries Plc, to apologise to one of its customers, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, for the wrongful inscription of “low sugar’’ on its product.

He urged the court to order the company to tender a written apology to him as he had been injured by the deception. Izevbigie also prayed the court to pronounce that the inscription on the product was misleading to the public. Delivering judgment, Ikponmwen, the Chief Judge of the state, ordered the company to tender an unreserved apology to members of the public who might have been lured by the “trade trick’’ of low sugar on the can.

The judgement in the matter between Prof Ernest Izevibigie and NB Plc (Amstel Malta) is that NB should apologise formally to the plaintiff and the consuming public within 30 days for “misleading” information regarding the “low sugar” label on Amstel Malt. The apology is required to be public widely in the mass media.
The report from Benin is that NB counsel was not in court and we could not therefore get the company’s position on the next step.
