Amstel Malta: NB To Appeal Edo High Court Judgement
Nigerian Breweries has expressed readiness to appeal the judgement of Justice Esohe Ikponmwen of the Edo High Court on Friday on the alleged culpability of the company for allegedly misleading the public that its product, Amstel Malta had low sugar when it knew fully well that the product had more sugar.
A former Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Professor Ernest Izevbigie, had challenged the Nigerian Breweries in a suit filed before the court, contesting that the product had more sugar contrary to the company’s information inscribed on the product.
The claimant, through his counsel, Mr Emmanuel Okonkwo alleged in the suit B/281/17 that a laboratory test result had revealed that Amstel Malta drink allegedly contained more sugar than the company claimed in the inscription on the brand. Izevbigie asked the court to pronounce that the inscription on the product was misleading to the public. Izevbigie, had during cross examination by the defence counsel, maintained that the Amstel Malta did not merit the “low sugar’’ label, saying it was deceitful as proven by clinical research.
But the Nigerian Breweries, which denied the allegation, said all its products complied with the prescribed nutritional value in accordance with best practice and asked the court to strike out the suit for lack of merit.
