● Namalomba points to MCP infighting

A political row has broken out after the opposition Malawi Congress Party alleged that vehicles belonging to its leader former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and other party officials were attacked during a church celebration in Blantyre.

The allegation was made at a press briefing in Blantyre today’s morning by MCP spokesperson Dr. Jessie Kabwila.

Kabwila said the incident took place at Henry Henderson Institute Secondary School where Chakwera and other officials were attending the CCAP Blantyre Synod’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

She told reporters that Chakwera’s entourage was attacked by suspected thugs dressed in black suits as it entered the HHI grounds.

Kabwila said that the party believes the incident was orchestrated by the Democratic Progressive Party.

She said the MCP has reported the matter to the police and expects action to be taken.

Kabwila condemned what she described as barbaric conduct during what should have been a peaceful church gathering.

She also called on the Malawi Police Service to provide security for the party’s leadership and members.

In an interview, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba distanced the governing party from the claims.

Namalomba said the DPP had no business with the MCP and no reason to attack its officials.

He suggested that the reported violence could be linked to internal divisions and leadership wrangles within the MCP.

“We do not have any business with them. I mean why should DPP attack them? They need to check within their party,” Namalomba said.

The incident is said to have occurred during the climax of celebrations marking 150 years of the CCAP Blantyre Synod.

The event brought together thousands of faithful, church leaders and political figures from across the political divide.

Former President Chakwera is among the political figures attending the celebrations.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. George Chaponda represented President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as Guest of Honour.
