The leadership of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh at the Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos, deserves commendation for its renewed commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability and effective policing in Lagos and Ogun states.

Since assuming duty as the senior police officer in charge of the Zone, AIG Jimoh has demonstrated a determination to strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force through policies that place discipline, respect for human rights and protection of lives and property at the centre of policing.

A major feature of his administration is its zero tolerance for police misconduct. Officers found culpable of unprofessional conduct and violations of established regulations are made to face appropriate disciplinary action, reinforcing the principle that no officer is above the law.

Equally commendable is the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on human rights violations.

Under AIG Jimoh, suspects are not to be detained beyond the legally permissible period, generally 24 to 48 hours depending on the circumstances, without being charged before a court, except where otherwise permitted by law.

This reflects a commitment to constitutional rights, due process and the principle that arrest should never become an avenue for punishment or intimidation.

Under his leadership, Zone 2 has also remained focused on its fundamental responsibility of preventing crime and protecting lives and property across Lagos and Ogun states.

His policing philosophy seeks to bring security closer to the people, ensuring that law-abiding residents feel safe in their homes, on the streets and at their workplaces.

Another significant policy direction is the determination to end police involvement in civil disputes, particularly land matters.

Police officers are not expected to use their authority to settle private disagreements or intimidate parties in civil cases.

Where criminal offences are established, such matters are to be investigated strictly in accordance with the law.

AIG Jimoh has equally moved to end the flagrant and indiscriminate transfer of cases from divisional and area commands to the Zonal Headquarters.

This initiative is designed to strengthen the responsibilities of lower formations, eliminate unnecessary administrative bottlenecks and ensure that cases are handled at the appropriate levels.

The Zone is expected to concentrate on special cases, assignments specifically given to it by the Inspector-General of Police and other matters falling within the statutory and operational responsibilities for which the Zonal Command was established.

This approach will allow the Zonal Headquarters to focus its resources on matters requiring its intervention while strengthening accountability and efficiency across the command structure.

Indeed, AIG Olohundare Moshood Jimoh is taking policing to the next level in Zone 2 through an administration that emphasises professionalism, operational efficiency, discipline and people-oriented service.

His determination to make policing accessible to the people of Lagos and Ogun states deserves public support.

Modern policing must not only be about arresting offenders but also preventing crime, respecting citizens’ rights and earning the trust of the communities being served.

While security challenges remain, the policies and administrative direction of the present Zone 2 leadership represent important steps towards building a more disciplined, responsive and accountable police command.

The people of Lagos and Ogun states deserve a police institution that protects rather than intimidates, serves rather than exploits and enforces the law without violating it.

AIG Olohundare Moshood Jimoh’s administration deserves commendation for advancing this standard of professional policing.
