“Some Medical doctors Have Mental Challenges”, Says Dr. Kadiri

By Tricia Chinyere/ A consultant neuro- psychiatrist and founder of Pinnacle Medical Services, Dr Maymunah Kadiri, said many believed only 1% people on the streets are mentally disorder and queried what happened 99% peoples out there.

Kadiri said this at the Ordinary General Meeting and Scientific Conference organised by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

The theme of the event was entitled: “ Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control In The Nigeria Health Sector: subtheme: Doctors’Mental Health Challenges: A Practical Approach”.

The consultant said a lot of  Nigerians who are mentally unstable are walking around unchecked, hence there is need for more advocacy on mental health awareness.

She advises Doctors to be up and doing because majority of them work under pressure and that quite a number of them have issues with their relationship and families which may affect their emotion and mental ability.

Kadiri, urges doctors to seek help from colleagues or other people around them, stressing that they should not treat themself and families members because emotions are involved.

According to her, “some doctors have mental problem.  They are human beings like us but do not see themselves as weak because physician do not heal themselves just like every average person out there”.

In his welcome addressed, ARD president,Badmus Abeola.M. said the aim of the event was to create awareness on resistant of antibiotics being escalating all over.

Badmus said antibiotics drugs should not given to patients if not sign by trained physician because a lot people go to pharmacy to buy antibiotics with out doctor’s prescription or by a trained physician, adding that with this preventive measure “we can tackled the abusive use of antibiotic drugs in Nigeria.

He also advices the health workers to share whatever psychological problem they are passing through because it has become worrisome the rising cases of depression and suicide among health sectors.
