Mahmud Umar Muhammad PhD is a Deputy Director at the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Bauchi. Dr. Mahmud is a renowned expert of international repute and a passionate Community Development Activist. In an interview with newsmen, the Patigi born good governance advocate said marginalization is still a big challenge in Kwara North. Excerpts;
A year after O TO GE; what can you say about the revolution that changed political narrative of Kwara state?
I want to use this medium to congratulate Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (AA) for his election victory and swearing-in as the executive Governor of kwara state. We agitated for O TO GE and God’s willing we were able to overcome the ruling dynasty which has become a problem for the entire state. We thank God for the change he has brought to kwara, we are seriously looking unto Governor AA to wipe the tears of kwarans, because the expectation is so high.
What’s your perspective about the outcome of 2019 elections in Kwara
Massive support is the key, in Governance and democratic settings, the victory for all the elective post for OTOGE (APC) is not good enough, because everything is going to be one party affair, but when you have different political parties, constructive criticism can come up and also check and balance.
We hope marginalization of Kwara North has stopped with the new administration?
Kwara North has been suffering from this for a very long time and the trend keeps continue, have not seen significant changes in those things, let me start from the formation of the cabinet of Governor AA, he has made a mistake from day one, I think the Governor is running a dictatorship type of Government, because all his commissioner and aides were single highhandedly picked by himself. I see a problem in the cabinet, it is a cabinet of yes sir, because nobody in that Government can challenge or criticise the governor if there is any wrong doing, because they will be afraid not to lose their position, another example is the issue of KWASU Vice Chancellor appointment; this is a state university funded by the three senatorial districts and each district should be given a fair play in the university system. Prof. NA-ALLAH was the VC for 10years from kwara central and you had an acting VC from kwara north and during the course of interview, two Professors from kwara north came 1st, and 2nd but unfortunately the 3rd person became the Vice Chancellor. We see this as big slap in the face of kwara North and so many meaningful appointment has not been given to Kwara North, I believe the problem of kwara north has not been resolved.
Infrastructure development in kwara north is fair, because how many schools, roads and other things that are being done, they are renovating only one school in Patigi, which is my local government. I can only score the Governor 30% compare to what is been done in the past, kwara north need good roads because they are blessed with Agriculture, so they need the means to transport the food product. The Governor still needs to sit up on road infrastructure so that kwara north will have more development.
How would you describe performance of lawmakers from Kwara North?
If you want a good result, you should have a good representative, Kwara North has always had bad representation, but as you can see that we have a new senator from our district, which is Senator Sadiq Umar and I really commend him, because he is representing us very well. I think the speaker of the Kwara state house of assembly is performing below expectations. I think he is inexperience, he need to do more, people should have access to him, I believe with time he is going to perform as well. The other House of Assembly members are nothing to write home about because they are just coming into the folds of politics, so am not expecting magic from the state lawmakers especially from kwara north, because I think they are candidate that are not good enough for our people. Hon. Ndakene from the start he is a little bit slow, but know i think he has been performing.
COVID-19 pandemic is shaking the world at the moment, what is your advice for Kwara state government and kwarans
Covid-19, my advice is that kwarans should follow the guidelines given by NCDC to minimise the spread of the disease, secondly the lockdown is also good as to curb the spread of the disease, and I think the kwara state government is doing their best.
Do you think OTOGE will save current political office holders in 2023 polls?
On future election people need to be enlightened more, so that they will know the type of people that want to represent them, people should not be get carried away by moneybag politicians that will want to induce them with money to sell their conscience. Our community development should always be the paramount of the people, because once you are giving money, they have bought your conscience, they should always look for credible candidate to vote for in future election.
