DIG Ibrahim Larmode: Police, EFCC, HEDA, Others In Grief
By Wale Abydeen/LAGOS// The death of the super rich police officer, Ibrahim Lamorde, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG is a sudden shock not only to security and anti graft enforcement agencies in Nigeria but also to notable anti corruption activists. This is because of Lamorde’s professional career as a police officer and his stint at the country’s anti graft agency.
Confirming his demise through a statement signed by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP and spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun describes Lamorde as a distinguish Police Officer and exemplary leader. The NPF boss stated that throughout his illustrious career, DIG Lamorde rose through the ranks, serving with staunch professionalism. His integrity and dedication were evident in every role he undertook, culminating in his appointment as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2011. During his tenure at the EFCC, DIG Lamorde was renowned for his steadfast stance against corruption. His leadership led to the successful prosecution of numerous high-profile cases and the recovery of substantial sums of looted funds.
Upon concluding his service at the EFCC in 2015, DIG Lamorde continued his distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force, eventually retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021 as the pioneer DIG for the Force Intelligence Department (FID). His career was characterized by an unyielding commitment to justice and the principles of professional policing.
IGP Egbetokun said that the entire Nigeria Police Force mourns the loss of DIG Ibrahim Lamorde. His legacy as a dedicated officer and an anti-corruption crusader will continue to inspire future generations of police officers. In his words, The Commissioner of Police, Supermeraral Police Unit, Professor Allen Abiola in a WhatsApp post on Security Monitor platform, said “DIG Lamorde as a fine Officer and a Gentleman. A very good friend. May his soul rest in perfect peace”.
Similarly, The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, expresses grief over the sudden death of its former Executive Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde.
Lamorde is the pioneer Director of Operations and third substantive Chairman of the EFCC between February 15, 2012 and November 9, 2015. The EFCC in a statement made available to SECURITY MONITOR which was signed by the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale noted that Lamorde served the nation actively as a focused and gallant anti- graft fighter.
“He will be sorely missed both at the EFCC and the nation at large”, Oyewale said.
The world famous anti graft fighter Civil Society Organization, CSO, the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) mourns the sudden passing of former Chairman of the EFCC.
HEDA in a statement signed by its Chairman, Lanre Suraju says Lamorde untimely death represents a significant loss to the Nigerian anti-corruption community and the nation as a whole.
HEDA Resource Centre, expressed profound grief over the loss. “The passing of Ibrahim Lamorde is a great loss to us in the anti-corruption community and particularly to HEDA Resource Centre. During his tenure as EFCC Chairman, he was known for his collaborative strategy and stance against corruption. His leadership of the agency resulted in the prosecution of several high-profile cases and the recovery of billions of naira in looted funds.”
Suraju continued, “We commiserate with his bereaved family, the anti-graft agency, the Nigeria Police Force, and the entire nation. We pray for his departed soul to find solace with God.”
Ibrahim Lamorde’s tenure as EFCC Chairman was marked by his steadfast commitment to combating corruption. His efforts significantly advanced the fight against corruption in Nigeria, leaving a legacy of integrity and dedication that will not be forgotten.
Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, DIG Lamorde dedicated his life to public service and police, joining the Force in 1986 and retired in 2021.
