KMC Accuses lawmakers of failing in oversight responsibilities_

A leading Pro-Democracy group, Kwara Must Change has faulted the Kwara State Ministry of Health and Hospital Management Bureau over the poor management of state hospitals, poor service delivery as well as the poor conduct of hospital staff.

The group also accused federal lawmakers of failing in their oversight responsibilities, especially on the poor management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof Yusuf Abdullahi.

While assessing the general state of healthcare management in the state on its popular radio program, Etowa on Sobi fm, the group rated the administrative affairs of state hospitals very poorly, noting that state hospitals are not performing to expectations and the conduct of hospital staff is not only poor, but unacceptable.

According to the guest, Abdullateef Babafila, the conduct of hospital staff to emergency situations, especially at Ilorin General Hospital is to say the least, unfortunate.

“Healthcare officials are known for their oath of service to care for live, unfortunately, a considerable number of officials of state hospitals in Kwara are not good examples of their profession.

Babafila, who narrated how staff of the hospital failed to receive emergency patients and accord them the urgent attention they require said that, the staff including doctors and nurses, refused to administer first aid treatment, in addition to using disparaging comments on patients.

“How can healthcare officials refuse to accept a dying patient brought by good samaritan and turn such patient back home without any sense of responsibility”.

The management of state hospitals are failing due to lack of adequate oversight by the ministry he said, adding that the authorities must sack workers who are unwilling to commit themselves to the job.

Speaking further on the state of healthcare management in the state, especially at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Babafila said that the operation of the UITH is also poor.

According to him, most of the lapses in our healthcare system are administrative inefficiency, not political failure.

“Operation of UITH is far below standard, the management is inefficient and the hospital is not accountable and we cannot blame that on the political head”

Babafila called on federal lawmakers in the state to perform their oversight responsibilities on the hospital, saying that the failure of the hospital is largely due to lack of adequate oversight.

He appealed for improvement in the operation of all hospitals in the state, noting that the state government has invested more in health sector beyond the output of the sector.
