People with Disabilities in Mangochi Decry Lack of Support and Inclusion

By Michael Martin//MALAWI

People with disabilities in Mangochi have expressed their deep concerns regarding the lack of support and inclusion from authorities and stakeholders who claim to help vulnerable groups.

This sentiment was made today 12th December during an engagement with the Centre for Civil Society Strengthening (CCSS) organization, where individuals with disabilities shared their experiences and frustrations.

In his remarks, Jawadu London, chairperson of the District Disability Forum, people with disabilities are often sidelined in many activities and decision-making processes.

He said this exclusion is particularly ironic, given that the same authorities and stakeholders preach inclusion and equality.

London emphasized that this lack of support and inclusion is worsening the vulnerability of people with disabilities

The CCSS organization has been working to promote and influence women and young human rights defenders.

Olipa Mwanza, Project Officer at CCSS, hailed the participants for bringing out their concerns, allowing the organization to better assist them.

Mwanza emphasized the importance of inclusive development, where the needs and rights of all individuals, including those with disabilities, are taken into account.

Malawi has made significant progress in promoting the rights of people with disabilities. The country has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and has enacted the Disability Act of 2012.

However, despite these efforts, people with disabilities continue to face significant challenges, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

The concerns raised by people with disabilities in Mangochi highlight the need for greater inclusion and support. Authorities and stakeholders must work to ensure that the rights and needs of people with disabilities are taken into account in all development initiatives. This includes providing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, as well as promoting inclusive decision-making processes.

As Malawi continues to work towards promoting lthe rights and inclusion of people with disabilities, it is essential that the concerns and experiences of individuals with disabilities are taken into account.
