MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT WITHOUT LICENSE IN MCHINJI

By Michael Martin//MALAWI

A 25-year-old man, Shepard Banda, has been arrested in Mchinji for being in possession of medical equipment and laboratory medicine without a license.

The arrest was made possible by a tip-off from well-wishers, who informed the police that Banda was harboring the medical equipment in Kholoni Village, Traditional Authority Mlonyeni, along the Mchinji/Lilongwe M12 road.

According to Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer Limbani Mpinganjira, the police swiftly raided Banda’s premises and seized various medical items, including oxygen tubes, laboratory containers, laboratory medicine, and two syringes. Banda was unable to account for the equipment and was subsequently arrested.

Mpinganjira said that the arrest of Shepard Banda comes amidst concerns about the theft of medical equipment and drugs in Malawi.

“In a similar incident, four people, including two health workers, were arrested in Mchinji for allegedly stealing drugs and medical equipment.”

He said that Banda is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges for being in possession of medical equipment without a license.

“The police are still investigating how Banda acquired the medical equipment,” he added.

As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what consequences Banda will face for his actions.

However, one thing is clear: the theft of medical equipment and drugs is a serious issue that affects the delivery of healthcare services in Malawi.
