A 24-year-old man, Manuel Mazoni, has been arrested by Lilongwe Police for breaking into the house of an Indian national, Harpal Singh, at Area 9, and stealing various items valued at K14 million.

According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred on the night of December 27, 2024.

Chigalu said Mazoni, an ex-convict, broke into Singh’s house and stole several items, including two iPhones, a laptop, an Apple iPad, a Samsung phone, a Bluetooth speaker, a wallet, and a purse containing K400,000 and K200,000 in cash, respectively.

“After a thorough investigation, including analyzing CCTV footage, detectives identified Mazoni as the culprit.

“He was arrested in Area 36 and admitted to committing the offense. Mazoni also revealed that he had sold the stolen items to another person.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of two other individuals, who were found to be in possession of some of the stolen items,” he said.

He added that one of the suspects had already sold some of the items to a third person, who had crossed the border into Mozambique.

Police are working to recover the stolen items from Mozambique.

Mazoni, who hails from Chidothi Village, Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa District, and the two other suspects will appear in court soon to face applicable charges.

This is not Mazoni’s first run-in with the law. In 2019, he was sentenced to prison for breaking into the Malawi Electoral Commission offices at Area 3 and stealing computers.
