In the bustling streets of Abuja, where governance demands both vision and resilience, a new leader has emerged—one with a track record of service, excellence, and dedication to transformative leadership. Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision to her role, ensuring that Abuja continues to thrive as Nigeria’s administrative and political hub.

At just 45, Dr. Mahmoud has distinguished herself in public service, navigating the complex corridors of power with remarkable resilience. Her appointment as the deputy to the former Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, was no coincidence. She is no stranger to governance. As Kano State’s Commissioner for Higher Education, she implemented bold reforms that strengthened the state’s tertiary education sector. Now, on the federal stage, she is determined to make an even greater impact.

A Journey Rooted in Excellence

Born on January 15, 1978, in Bunkure, Kano State, Dr. Mahmoud’s journey to leadership was built on a strong educational foundation. She attended Bunkure Primary School and Government Girls Science Secondary School, Garko, before proceeding to the College of Arts and Remedial Studies, Kano. She later earned her medical degree from Bayero University, Kano, in 2005.

For Dr. Mahmoud, medicine was more than a career—it was a calling. After completing her residency at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, she became a consultant family physician and a member of the West African College of Physicians. This phase of her career sharpened her skills as a planner, problem-solver, and advocate for public health—qualities that would later define her leadership in governance.

Making Waves in Governance

Dr. Mahmoud’s transition into politics was a natural extension of her passion for service. As Kano’s Commissioner for Higher Education, she played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth reopening of tertiary institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, minimizing disruptions to education.

Beyond her commissioner role, she has been deeply involved in grassroots politics, serving in the Kano State Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council (2022/23) and chairing the Welfare Subcommittee of the Women’s Wing. Her leadership extended to academia as well—she played a key role in establishing the College of Health Sciences at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

Her professional affiliations further highlight her credibility. She is an active member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Society for Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), where she once served as Treasurer.

Notable Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Mahmoud’s outstanding contributions have earned her several accolades, including:

Award of Honour, Ministry of Higher Education, Kano State (2023)

Medical Women’s Association Award of Honour (2023)

Distinguished Merit Award, Nigeria Focus Achievers International Magazine (2022)

Kano Influencers Award, Christ Embassy Northwest Zone (2022)

A New Chapter: The Task Ahead in the FCT

Now at the helm of the FCT as Minister of State, Dr. Mahmoud faces the challenge of overseeing Abuja’s development. The city, a blend of world-class infrastructure and underserved communities, requires strategic governance to bridge the gap.

Her key responsibilities include overseeing the six Area Councils of the FCT, coordinating the activities of traditional rulers, and supervising several Mandate Secretariats, including Social Development, Health, Agriculture, Satellite Towns, and Area Councils. With a proactive approach, she has already begun engaging with key officials to drive impactful policies.

One of the most pressing issues she must tackle is the rising number of beggars in Abuja’s city center. As Nigeria’s capital, Abuja is expected to maintain order and uphold a strong social welfare system. Addressing this challenge will require a comprehensive strategy, including rehabilitation programs, job creation initiatives, and policy enforcement.

Redefining Leadership in a Male-Dominated Space

In a political landscape traditionally dominated by men, Dr. Mahmoud is breaking barriers with quiet determination. Her rise is not a product of favoritism but of competence, hard work, and an unyielding commitment to service.

With her impressive credentials and a strong resolve to bring meaningful change, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure is not just another name in Nigerian politics—she is a force redefining leadership in the nation’s capital.
