President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform Initiative.
The appointment, announced on Friday, follows Jega’s role as co-chair of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside President Tinubu. The committee had earlier recommended measures to address challenges in the sector, including the establishment of a Ministry of Livestock.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said, “His appointment as Special Adviser will reinforce the gains of the presidential committee and ensure the continued momentum of the reforms already in motion.”
Jega, 68, is a former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, and currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano. He is also a member of the International Elections Advisory Council.
As INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015, Jega oversaw the 2015 general elections.
The Tinubu administration has prioritized livestock sector reforms to address farmer-herder conflicts, enhance food security, and boost agricultural development.
