Minister says Surveyors propelling Malawi 2063 Agenda

Minister of Lands, Deus Gumba has emphasised that Surveying professionals have a key role in helping Government in implementing Agriculture Tourism Mining and Manufacturing (ATM and M) strategy as it hinges on land resource.
Speaking at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi on Thursday, during the opening of 2025 Elective Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Surveyors Institute of Malawi (SIM), Gumba said as professionals of Land Economy, Quantity Surveying and Land Surveying, Surveyors who are equipped with skills and knowledge should collaborate with his ministry and jointly work for the ATM and M strategy which is key in the realisation of the Malawi 2063 Vision.
The minister advised the professionals to ensure they incorporate principles and concepts of innovations, technological advancements and environmental sustainability in their projects.
“The development of technological innovations presents an opportunity for us to embrace renewable energy sources and promote environmental sustainability that are paramount in the ATM and M strategy. With these ideas we can mitigate the impacts of climate change and create more resilient urban environments,” he said.
Gumba committed to fostering collaborative relationship between Government and SIM, saying through that partnership, SIM has helped Malawi in shaping and implementation of new land laws through Ministry of Lands, citing Property Valuation Act, Real Estate Management Act and Sectional Tittles Act.
SIM President, Desmond Namangale said apart from being an elective conference, the gathering will also serve as a platform for their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as they will be sharing various expertise for their professional growth.
“We have lined up a number of presentations and one of them is on Mvera Smart City, a sustainable city which is expected change the landscape of Dowa District and Malawi as a whole,” he said.
Namangale said as professionals, they are ready to embrace technology in their work as advised by the minister, a thing he said will contribute to their sustainable market relevance.
In an interview, one of the participants, Sharonrose Nkomba who is Real Estate Council Member said the meeting will map the way forward on how SIM, its members from Land Economy chapter, Quantity Surveying chapter and Land Surveying chapter together with boards established under various land acts will work together.
This year’s conference is being held under the theme ‘Harnessing Technological Innovations for Professional Excellence; The Surveyor’s Contributions to National Agenda 2063.’
