A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE.

Its origins trace to the formation of the 1,200-member Hausa Constabulary, which was established to maintain law and order in the northern regions of the country. Later, in 1896, the Lagos Police was formed, further strengthening the framework for organized policing in the southern regions.

In 1930, the NPF was formally established, marking a significant milestone in the institutionalization of policing in Nigeria. Over the years, the force has undergone substantial evolution, including processes of regionalization and, later, nationalization during the First Republic, reflecting the country’s socio-political changes and growing need for a unified security apparatus.

Today, the NPF stands as a professional law enforcement institution, rooted in over a century of service, commitment, and adaptation. Its development reflects not only the history of policing in Nigeria but also the enduring dedication of its officers to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law across the nation.
