President Lazarus Chakwera has publicly conceded defeat in the 2025 general elections even before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announces the official final results.

The outgoing president addressed the nation in a televised speech from Kamuzu Palace, affirming his respect for the will of the people.

Speaking with calm and clarity, Chakwera began by thanking Malawians for participating in the democratic process.

He said: “I accept the results of this election with a heart full of humility and gratitude.

“I thank God for the journey we have walked together and for guiding us through a peaceful election.”

Chakwera acknowledged that the outcome was not what he and his supporters had hoped for but insisted that respecting the voice of the people is the highest duty of any leader in a democracy.

“The people of Malawi have spoken. And as their servant, I have listened,” he stated.

In a nation where political transitions have at times been tense, Chakwera commended all Malawians for ensuring that the election remained peaceful.

“I am proud of the maturity our nation has shown. Not a single life was lost, not a single stone was thrown,” he said, drawing applause from those present.

The president also extended his gratitude to the Malawi Electoral Commission, the judiciary, security agencies, and local observers for upholding their integrity during the electoral process.

He called their conduct “a shining example of institutional responsibility.”

In a gracious gesture, Chakwera congratulated the winning candidate whose name he did not mention, as official results are pending and wished them wisdom and strength in the years ahead.

“To my successor, I say: may your leadership bring unity, development, and dignity to every Malawian.”

Chakwera urged Malawians not to let political differences divide them.

“Elections come and go, but Malawi remains. Let us now come together, heal, and rebuild stronger than before,” he said, calling on both winners and losers to put the nation first.

The outgoing president assured the nation that his administration would facilitate a peaceful and transparent handover of power.

“My team and I are committed to working closely with the president elect to ensure that the transition is smooth and respectful of the constitution,” he affirmed.

Chakwera took a moment to reflect on his term in office, highlighting efforts made in governance reform, public sector accountability and infrastructure development.

“While we may not have accomplished everything, we have laid foundations worth building upon,” he noted.

Ending his address on a hopeful note, Chakwera expressed faith in the country’s future.

“I leave office not with bitterness but with belief belief that our democracy is growing stronger, and that our best days as a nation are still ahead,” he added.

Again, Chakwera thanked his supporters, family and fellow leaders across the region.

He asked for continued prayers and support for the incoming administration.

He concluded: “This is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter for Malawi. May God bless you all, and may God bless Malawi.”
