ROAD SAFETY: NDLEA PROPOSES DRUG TESTS FOR DRIVERS TO CURB ACCIDENTS
By Olayiwola Ibrahim // The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has proposed mandatory drug integrity tests for drivers seeking licenses in Nigeria.
This move aims to reduce the increasing number of road crashes linked to drug abuse.
Chairman NDLEA, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, research has shown that drug abuse significantly contributes to accidents on Nigerian highways.
Drivers will be required to undergo drug tests before applying for licenses.
The NDLEA is working with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to implement this initiative, with both agencies nearly finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Reports states that NDLEA has trained professionals who will train FRSC officials to conduct on-the-spot drug tests for drivers.
According to NDLEA, the agency said that initiative aims to deter commercial drivers from indulging in alcohol and psychoactive substances while driving.
The MoU will enable both agencies to assess drivers and passengers during joint highway operations, enhancing road safety.
The NDLEA believes that drug abuse plays a significant role in road accidents, and addressing this issue is crucial to ensuring safety on Nigerian highways.
By partnering with the FRSC, the agency aims to tackle the root causes of crashes and promote a safer driving environment.
