Police in Balaka have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying a person whose remains were found in skeletal form.

The shocking discovery was made yesterday in a bush located at Miliya Village under the authority of Traditional Authority Phalula.

According to police, the identity of the deceased person remains unknown.

District police spokesperson, Gladson M’bumpha has confirmed the incident in a statement released to the media.

He explained that a woman from the area was collecting firewood when the discovery was made.

M’bumpha said while in the bush, the woman reportedly heard dogs barking continuously in one particular spot.

“Out of curiosity, she decided to move closer to find out what had attracted the animals’ attention.

To her shock, she found the dogs feeding on what appeared to be human flesh,” he added in a statement.

He further said that the frightened woman quickly returned to the village and informed other residents about what she had seen.

“The matter was reported to the police, who immediately dispatched detectives to the scene.

The officers were accompanied by a clinical officer from Balaka District Hospital to help with verification,” he said.

He concluded that upon examination, the clinician confirmed that the bones were human remains, but the cause of death could not be established due to the advanced state of decomposition.
